“And what’s in it for her?” Taytum asked. “Pissing her loser of an ex off, obviously.” Ford said it jokingly, but everyone was thinking it—even me.
Was Claire the first girl I cared about? It agitated me that I was looking for her during my game, but as soon as I pulled myself away and focused on playing, I played better than ever. There was a nagging voice in the back of my head that told me it wasn’t only because I knew Tom Gardini’s guys were there.
“Jealous of what?” “Being so close to her but not being able to have her.” “Watch it,”
“Because the way she’s looking at him while he sweet-talks another girl across the room makes me want to punch him.”
“The fucking nerve,”
“There you are,”
“What?”
“I said…”
“There you are.”
“Better do it right. He’s looking over here.”
“I’m gonna spin you around, and you need to lean back on my chest, yeah?”
“This is going to make him irate.”
“He gets to fuck around on you and expect you to wait around for him as he ‘experiences’ college?”
“Absolutely not. No roommate of mine is gonna be played like that. I won’t have it.”
“I’m gonna kiss the hell out of you, Bryant, and don’t you dare pull away.” For the second time, our mouths sealed, but this time, the kiss was undeniably soul-wrecking, and that was when I knew that Claire Bryant was about to become
my weak side.
The fact that I was kissing Theo Brooks—again—just to prove a point to my ex was a long-forgotten thought. I felt the kiss in my bones.
couldn’t breathe in the air of the party. Instead, I could only breathe in Theo.
“Now”—his Adam's apple bobbed as he forced down a swallow—“that’s how you do it, Bryant.”
“Make sure you look over at him when I step away, because he will be staring over here. Two can play that game, baby. And he doesn’t get to make the rules when it comes to you.”
“Does this mean she’s rethought his earlier proposition?”
“He’s taunting you,” Theo growled, pulling me up the steps, passing by a few other couples. “And I’ve gotta say…I don't like it.”
“That’s fine, Claire Bear.” Chad went back to kissing the girl who was embarrassingly clueless as to what was going on. “You could use the experience.”
“You think she’s going to go back to you when I’m through with her?” My stomach dipped at the thought of Theo touching me. Remember, this isn’t real, Claire. “She won’t even remember your name after I touch her.”
“I could go back out there and throw him down the fucking stairs.”
“It’s fine.” I crossed my arms over my chest and looked away with embarrassment.
“It’s not fine. Did he blame his cheating on you? Did he say that you weren’t experienced enough or something?”
“I…yes. I mean, no.”
“Why do you care so much? It’s fine, Theo. Seriously, I’m fine.”
“I appreciate you… helping me downstairs, though. I won’t lie. It kind of felt good to piss him off.” “I owe you. You came to my rescue earlier.”
“There’s probably a line of puck bunnies out there too, waiting to get their turn with you.”
“Then they’ll be waiting a while.” “Why?”
“We gotta make them believe it. Especially Chad, because I’d love nothing more than to piss him off even further.”
“We will hang in here for a while, cause some thumping, maybe make a few noises, and they’ll believe it, yeah?”
“Cause some thumping and make some noises?” I laughed again. “What?”
“Now…” His smile grew wider as surprise took me captive. “I want you to make the same kind of sounds you made with him…and don’t be shy.”
“Don’t tell me.” I managed a whisper. “Don’t tell you what?” “Has he…”
“Has he never made you come?”
“Is that why he said you could use the experience?”
“He’s really gonna hate me now.” “Why?”
“I’ll lead.” The hand behind my back slowly slid down my spine and around my stomach, landing at the button of my jeans. “And you follow.”
“What are you doing?” she asked, looking down at my fingers on her jeans.
“Playing the game. Are you in?”
It was the fact that I was beyond perturbed that someone like Chad could make someone like her feel as if they weren’t good enough. He’s never made her come? Are you kidding me? I was going to blow him right the fuck out of the water, and when he heard the noises coming from the girl he gave up to dip his dick in other places, he was going to regret his decision pretty quickly. That I knew for certain.
“Don’t overthink it, Bryant,”
“It’s just me.” “It’s just you?”
“You’re the most popular guy on campus and—” “A jock?”
“I was gonna say...my roommate.”
“Even better. He’ll think we’re fucking every night. It’ll drive him wild, and the puck bunnies will stop showing up in our room. We gotta make them believe it, and if you can’t do that without my help, then here I am.”
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned about you, it’s that you are just as driven as I am.”
