2025 was a completely different reading year for me. At the time, I still didn’t know when the public exam notice would actually be released, so I had much more free time and much less pressure surrounding my routine. Everything changed in February 2026, when the edital for the Tribunal de Contas was finally published. Since then, most of my energy has been directed toward studying, and reading naturally became something secondary.

I still love books, but reading also demands mental energy from me, especially during stressful periods. Because of that, I stopped forcing myself to keep up with reading goals, Goodreads challenges, or new releases just for the sake of staying “updated” online. This year became much more about intentional reading than productive reading (but FOMO somethings hits really hard)

One of the biggest things I noticed in recent years is how repetitive many newer releases have started to feel to me. Sometimes it feels like the same story is being rewritten over and over again with slightly different aesthetics. Because of that, I started becoming more interested in older fantasy, classics, mystery novels, thrillers, and books that inspired many of today’s popular releases. Instead of constantly chasing what is trending, I want to better understand where these stories came from in the first place.

I also realized that I don’t want to buy books impulsively anymore, especially digital books that I may never read (I prefer physical books). One of my goals after the exam season is to build a more intentional personal library, visit secondhand bookstores, collect physical editions of books I truly loved, transfer my annotations into them, and create a collection that actually means something to me.

This year, reading became less about quantity and more about comfort. Most of the books I picked up in 2026 were books that helped me escape anxiety, calm my mind, or simply experience another reality for a little while. Since I read according to my mood, I stopped pressuring myself to read one thing at a time or follow strict reading structures (If I want to read four books simultaneously, that’s okay 😅), ALSO I stopped reading the continuation os series I didn't like just to "complete" the series.

My reading routine also changed completely. Right now, reading feels more like a reward after studying than a main activity itself. If I complete my study goals for the day, then I allow myself time to read at night. Some months are slower than others, and May may even become the first month where I don’t finish a single book. But honestly, I think I’m okay with that, since this is a temporary sacrifice.

After the exam on May 24th, I hope to take a small break from studying, reconnect with reading again, finish some ongoing series, and finally confront one of my biggest reader problems: my fear of finishing series I deeply love.

Maybe 2026 won’t be my biggest reading year. But I think it might become one of the most meaningful ones.
