Maria has made a career of using words to communicate. Her first paid job at a TV station nurtured her love of words. She has written PR, ads, and newsletters for products ranging from food to jewellery, fashion and interiors, as well as garden and building products. This led to a period of years with IVF treatments, specialists, and lots of despair. The outcome was successful (after 9 years) but going through those years was painful.(less)

I enjoyed this story as I can relate to it. My heritage is from Southern Italy, both my parents were born in a small town in the Campania region. The similarities to Puglia are there, except not the sea, my parents’ town is in the mountains.

Brilliant. A sci-fi with heart. Thanks Andy Weir for writing a beautiful story about human frailties and how we can overcome them. Great characters who showed me why I liked science and English at school. Go Grace and Rocky.

“We burst into a love affair so forceful it scares me. I’m married again, to another man and have a child with him – should I be allowed such indulgent feelings for someone I thought I no longer loved?”
Maria P Frino, Two Men in a Shed

“We who remember the time before were forced into submission. We have nothing left of us. We remember when it was revered to be your own star. To make something of yourself, to achieve. We have time now, but we are not allowed to shine. What we do is for them, to benefit them. We are cogs in their machine.”
Maria P Frino, Xenure Station: A Billion Light Years

“I’m standing with other parents on the school playground. A misery of humans, huddled, hunched, and wet.”
Maria P Frino, Edward's Cat: The Rise of the Kittens. And a Dog.

“They sit together peering out over the Pacific Ocean watching the honey colours of the sunrise. Amelia is grateful for the life she has now. William is her husband and they live in paradise.”

“I’m standing with other parents in the school playground. A misery of humans, huddled, hunched, and wet. Our golf umbrellas are only helping the top half of our bodies. Even though the storm has passed, the wind is still whipping up the rain, our legs are soaked. And isn’t it fun standing in wet feet?”
