1984
by
"My favorite piece of social science fiction(no aliens). I love that Orwell's best works both deal with showing communism/socialism in a frightening light but one is set in uber urban future world while the other (Animal Farm) is set in uber rural farmland. Foundation is almost as good but leaves even more to the imagination than 1984 does"

The Catcher in the Rye
by
"One of those books that rings so true to anyone that has constant inner dialogue, especially filled with cynicism. Maybe I've never been kicked out of school, or even close to being kicked out of anywhere, but how Caulfield thinks about virtually everyone he encounters throughout the story is just how I think about most of the people I meet similar to "Catcher" characters. It was like Salinger was writing out every judgement I had ever placed mentally on another person."

The Giver (The Giver, #1)
by
"A book for young people that doesn't have vampires or wizards. Yeah, they exist, and this one is great. How Lowry deals with a very grown-up science fiction theme in a way that kids/teenagers will totally understand is amazing"

Ender’s Game (Ender's Saga, #1)
by
"Possibly my favorite sci-fi book of all, and the only one I've ever read about kids that wasn't written for kids to read. Maybe he did write it for children but I wouldn't let my kids read it until high school because it portrays these kids in such a way that they apparently have zero childhood, zero unadulterated fun. Cold blooded killer most of the time but brilliant, is Ender Wiggin. Wildly entertaining but still makes you think a bit, great ending"
