Listopia > Booker Prize Eligible 2026
Please do not add a book unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure it will be eligible according to the official rules. (See: https://thebookerprizes.com/booker-pr... ). This means any NOVEL originally written in English (no translations), regardless of the nationality of its author, with a print edition scheduled for publication in the UK and/or Ireland between 1st October 2025 and 30th September 2026. [For books in translation, use THIS list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...]. Self-published novels are not eligible, nor are short story collections, unless there is a definite thread running through and connecting them. Non-fiction works (memoirs, essays, criticism, etc.) are also ineligible,
Also, please check to be sure your nominee is not ALREADY in the list under a different edition before you add it.
This list has no official connection with, or bearing on, the prize. In order to maintain the integrity and legitimacy of this list, books that don't appear to meet eligibility requirements will be removed and only reinstated by the publisher providing proper documentation to the administrator of a book's legitimacy.
Due to issues with 'ballot stuffing' by bogus accounts in the past, voting is restricted to those who have had an active GR account for at least three months and have rated and/or reviewed a minimum of 20 books. Anyone violating these rules will be permanently banned from voting in any future Booker Listopias.

Helm was actually published in Aug. 2025 by Faber & Faber, a UK publisher, so is eligible for the 2025 Booker, not the 2026 - so was removed.

short story collections are eligible if "there is a definite thread running through and connecting them". from the blurb, the stories all "move between the three countries that Salman Rushdie has called home – India, England and America – and explore what it means to approach the eleventh hour of life" so it might be
I added the Rushdie as a 'possibility', but hard to say till it's published. But as rachel indicates, being short stories does NOT automatically make it ineligible - and I have the feeling judges will be more than lenient because it's Rushdie. Also, All That Man Is made the cut a few years back with only the very thinnest of connection between those stories.

I have just read it and while it’s heavily essayistic and also part memoir it uses a retelling of stories from 1001 nights as a framing device - and an imaginative enough judging panel would consider it fiction

“I’m happy that the stories, very different from one another in setting, story and technique, nevertheless manage to be in conversation with one another, and with the two stories that serve as prologue and epilogue to this threesome…. I have come to think of the quintet as a single work, and I hope readers may see and enjoy it in the same way.”
It seems that Colm Tóibín’s book is a standalone edition of a novella that appeared in one of his earlier books. Is it still eligible?

Is it the date of the hard copy that counts as opposed to e-book? I am thinking of The True True Story which had an e-book released in September.
I think John -A Novel is a rerelease, unless I am confused and it hasn’t been released in the UK before.
I agree - I think that should be deleted. It was published in 2008. Even if it has not been published in the UK the fact it’s published anywhere before October 2022 would make it ineligible.

Sorry - that was my bad - I removed it!
Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer wrote: "Not sure it does unless Pantheon claim to publish it from their UK office."I was going off that assumption, since Pantheon has been part of Penguin Random House since 2013, which does have headquarters in London, as well as NY.
What is the deal with A day in the life of Russell Sprout? Out of the blue so many votes from so many people with no profile photos LOL
Rachel wrote: "I only see a U.S. pub for Missing Sam, anyone know if there is a UK one?"Google reckons the end of this month

Whoever was voting for Russell Sprout obvs. did not read the last paragraph of the rules against ballot stuffing. But it is ineligible for a number of reasons, most egregiously being that it was published in mid-2025, so is not within the eligibility dates. Nor at 50 pages, can it be considered a 'substantial' novel. It's been removed and will be so again, if someone chooses to add it in again.
Jamad wrote: "The Will Self is short stories- has it been included because they might be sufficiently connected?"I added it assuming such from the fact the synopsis mentions recurring characters... as a past nominee I would think the judging committee would be somewhat lenient in his case.
Jamad wrote: "Rachel wrote: "I only see a U.S. pub for Missing Sam, anyone know if there is a UK one?"Google reckons the end of this month"
Yes, but I only see that from Algonquin, the U.S. publisher. I don't see one from a UK publisher.

Thanks

It's being marketed as a novel. From the publisher's site: "dark yet hilariously satirical state-of-an-era novel" and a new interview with him in this week's Publishers Weekly refers to it only as a novel with an "unorthodox structure". So definitely think it should remain here!

Thanks - pity. He’s not my favourite😃
Rachel wrote: "Is The Winkle Picker eligible? Troubador seems to be a pay-to-publish self-publishing company."Good catch,,,,doesn’t seem to be eligible.
Not sure about Missing Sam, perhaps that should go for now, though, hopefully, it will be back later
Five of the 7 people who voted for The Sea Child, currently at #6, do not qualify to vote under the rule established last year due to ballot stuffing (see final paragraph under rules). Can Rachel or another GR librarian remove it please. TIA.
Votes on Until Our Voices Meet look suspicious. the voters might meet the criteria but look at when their books were added to get to the number count.
@Doug: Done!@Jamad: If they don't break the rules, we can't delete the novel, I think - still, inflated voting as a marketing strategy is very embarrassing for a book.
Meike wrote: "@Doug: Done!@Jamad: If they don't break the rules, we can't delete the novel, I think - still, inflated voting as a marketing strategy is very embarrassing for a book."
Fair enough, though 2 of them joined Goodreads this month.
Thanx for taking care of that Meike - please remove Until Our Voices Meet for the same reason. Hopefully these actions will deter other ballot stuffers!
@Doug: Done!@Jamad: I'm sorry, I was unsure!! Glad that Doug came to clarify that you were in fact correct.

Merci encore!
Jamad wrote: "Was the status of the Winkle picker ever resolved?"Yes, it was removed, as Troubadour is a self-publishing company, thus it is ineligible.

Apologies…will try and keep up.
Kuba wrote: ""The Slip" By Lucas Schaefer - is it not eligible?"No, published July 2025 so was eligible last year.
One book I have added The Winkle Picker by Sally Fox keeps being deleted from the list somehow. Any idea why?
