I must strenuously object to the leader on this list: Death in Venice, Tristan, Tonio Kröger . Although this particular collection has less than 100 ratings, each of those individual works has over 100. Seems like an unfair loophole....

Perhaps, but as creator of this list I must strenuously insist that this delightful early Penguin edition stay on the list. Anyway, it's already up to 76 ratings so it may be bumped off eventually.

I'm approaching 100 books on the REALLY Underrated list (up to 1,000) so at some point I'm going to have to create a new identical list to allow me to cast more votes. Until such time as GR allows us to vote for more than 100 books, we need workarounds.

Well, I've got to my 100 and I haven't gone through half of my books yet (I didn't even put in every underrated book, just the ones I thought were worthy of more notice).

I have to say, I'm surprised at some of the books that are not much rated. Obscure artistic treatises, sure -- but Nicole Hollander's marvelous "Sylvia" cartoon collections? Walt Kelly's "Pogo?" Ludwig Bemelmans' brilliant "Hotel Bemelmans" and "How to Travel Incognito?" Stephen Potter's magnificently wicked "Gamesmanship" and its sequels? Richard Armour's classic humorous histories? Good grief, even those ubiquitous Mad Magazine trade paperbacks and early Doonesbury books?

Wow.

I ... um. I guess I'm maybe a little out of the mainstream in my reading preferences after all.

Alessandra, it's because a) the readership on this site skews young, and b) even middle-aged and older readers aren't necessarily shelving or rating things they read a while ago. Some people only catalog the books they've read since joining the site. Thus there are books from many past decades which had large readerships then but seem underrated now.

Oh, okay.

Come to think of it, I was never much in tune even with my contemporaries' reading tastes, and the books popular with my generation when I skewed young are not much found on my shelves. I grew up on old Pogo and Charles Addams and Bill Mauldin cartoons, and I was reading P.G. Wodehouse and Douglas Adams when my contemporaries all seemed to be reading Peter Benchley and V.C. Andrews.

One of my reasons for cataloging books here is to help make people aware of the great book choices that are out there. I'm happier putting up something good that hardly anyone has heard of yet than I am adding the ten-thousandth rating to something.

(Actually, until these lists I hadn't paid that much attention to how many ratings books had. I was surprised to see that "really underrated" meant fewer than a thousand ratings. So many of my books have fewer than a hundred. So what's plain "underrated," ten thousand?)

I'm actually glad there are lists that tie the word "underrated" (or "unappreciated," etc.) to a specific value (in this event: no. of GR ratings). One just needs to take a look some other lists to see how arbitrary things can become if there is no attempt at defining what "unappreciated" actually means (even if only for purposes of the list in question); see eg.. this one: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/47... ...

The problem is that "unappreciated" can also mean "disliked by many." I do like that you've defined clearly what you mean by "underrated," since "under the radar" obviously did not work for that other list.

That's a great list, Alessandra, and you put so much work into creating it! I'll see about contributions as soon as I have a moment.

As far as notifications go, even if you add a list (or group discussion thread, etc.) to your update feed, GR will only send you one "comment" notification by mail until you visit the list the next time. In other words, a notification you receive by mail may mean that only one person commented on the list, or one person posted a comment, another person responded, and a merry dialogue ensued. Then again, once you've revisited the list (following the link included in your email notification from GR) -- and in fact, every time you refresh the list in your browser -- that will "free" the way for another email notification once the next comment is posted ... and so on.

An easier way to check what is going on on a given list or discussion thread is by clicking on the little "g" (= "Goodreads") symbol on top of every page of this site (next to the symbols for friend requests, personal messages and your own profile page). That will open up a java screen showing all your notifications, similar to the overlay screen you get when you click on the "add book/author" link above the comment field at the bottom of every page (or when you edit your reviews, etc.) -- on that overlay screen you can actually see whether one or several persons have posted on a given list (or group discussion thread, etc.).

This latter feature is a newer one ... I suspect when they created the original email notification feature, they didn't want to clutter people's inboxes the way it used to happen with Facebook and some of the other social networking sites in the early days (and still does with FB to a certain extent, as a matter of fact). The newer feature is making it much easier to check back on GR pages you're interested in -- the downside being, however, that you actually have to be logged into GR already to access it. It's faster than the email notifications thing, too, though ... a good thing, overall! :)

Whenever I follow discussions, I check the notification only box, so I don't get emails at all, just notifications when I log in. I click on the little "g" whenever I see red numbers there ... Those were the numbers that were missing.

I suppose I could just remember to check the "g" regularly.
