This is an alternative to the popular "Best Books Ever" list, focusing on the most obscure books. Here's the rule: add any book--in any genre--so long as it has fewer than 100 ratings on Goodreads.

There is another list for REALLY Underrated Books (Fewer than 1,000 GRs ratings).
There is further list for REALLY Seriously Underrated Books (100 to 500 GR ratings).
And for those who are feeling crowded even on this "fewer than 100 ratings" list, here are a few lists designed to give a home to even more undeservedly obscure books:
Super Underrated Books (fewer than 50 GR ratings) and
Ridiculously Underrated Books (fewer than 20 GR ratings); as well as a list for
Really Underrated Children's Books (children's books with fewer than 100 GR ratings).

hah - whodafunk that on such a select list I would have been able to vote for one book already on it.

Thank you for creating this list, Lobstergirl -- even the other "Really Underrated Books" list has gotten so large in the interim that the most honest-to-God undeservedly obscure books are getting buried there now! :)
Bettie wrote: "hah - whodafunk that on such a select list I would have been able to vote for one book already on it."I have no less than four on this list that others have voted for as well ... dunno what that says about my reading preferences?!! :)
I must strenuously object to the leader on this list: Death in Venice, Tristan, Tonio Kröger . Although this particular collection has less than 100 ratings, each of those individual works has over 100. Seems like an unfair loophole....

Anyway, it's already up to 76 ratings so it may be bumped off eventually.

Until such time as GR allows us to vote for more than 100 books, we need workarounds.
It's distressing that I'm already up to 82 books on this list. Very distressing. Soon this list will need its own duplicate...Clearly, I am reading mostly very, very unpopular books.

hah - know where you are coming from. I am up to 36 and that is the ones encountered this year so far as I was too lazy to backtrack.
How about a 50 and under list?
Yes to both - will you set them up? I really do read a lot of 'fresh snow' in a year and mostly it is Gutenberg to blame (in a good way, of course)
Sure. I also set up yesterday a Really Underrated Children's list, because I was putting so many children's books on this list. It got out of control so I decided to segregate them.
For the chilluns:

Okay, two new lists. Fewer than 50:

Fewer than 20:

Apparently I also read very, very unpopular books. I only have put up books from my Favorites shelf so far, and that's well, okay, only seventeen at the moment. But there are so many more. For a bunch of them I'm the only, sole, one rating. Should I go on?
Alessandra: Absolutely (and I know how you feel. Got several where I'm the only one to have rated them as well).Lobstergirl: Same thing for me on that score, too. Will hasten to add my contributions to the "fewer than 50/20" and "underrated children's books" lists also ...
Oh, and I SO had to snag that title picture of this list!! :)
Well, I've got to my 100 and I haven't gone through half of my books yet (I didn't even put in every underrated book, just the ones I thought were worthy of more notice).I have to say, I'm surprised at some of the books that are not much rated. Obscure artistic treatises, sure -- but Nicole Hollander's marvelous "Sylvia" cartoon collections? Walt Kelly's "Pogo?" Ludwig Bemelmans' brilliant "Hotel Bemelmans" and "How to Travel Incognito?" Stephen Potter's magnificently wicked "Gamesmanship" and its sequels? Richard Armour's classic humorous histories? Good grief, even those ubiquitous Mad Magazine trade paperbacks and early Doonesbury books?
Wow.
I ... um. I guess I'm maybe a little out of the mainstream in my reading preferences after all.
Themis-Athena wrote: "Oh, and I SO had to snag that title picture of this list!! :) "I stole that from another comment thread. Hopefully the person I stole it from won't mind. If it disappears, we'll know why.
Alessandra, it's because a) the readership on this site skews young, and b) even middle-aged and older readers aren't necessarily shelving or rating things they read a while ago. Some people only catalog the books they've read since joining the site. Thus there are books from many past decades which had large readerships then but seem underrated now.
Lobstergirl wrote: "Alessandra, it's because a) the readership on this site skews young, and b) even middle-aged and older readers aren't necessarily shelving or rating things they read a while ago. Some people only ..."Oh, okay.
Come to think of it, I was never much in tune even with my contemporaries' reading tastes, and the books popular with my generation when I skewed young are not much found on my shelves. I grew up on old Pogo and Charles Addams and Bill Mauldin cartoons, and I was reading P.G. Wodehouse and Douglas Adams when my contemporaries all seemed to be reading Peter Benchley and V.C. Andrews.
One of my reasons for cataloging books here is to help make people aware of the great book choices that are out there. I'm happier putting up something good that hardly anyone has heard of yet than I am adding the ten-thousandth rating to something.
(Actually, until these lists I hadn't paid that much attention to how many ratings books had. I was surprised to see that "really underrated" meant fewer than a thousand ratings. So many of my books have fewer than a hundred. So what's plain "underrated," ten thousand?)

I saved it to my private image collection (offsite) as well -- so if it disappears, we can replace it! :)
Lobstergirl wrote: "The person who started the "Moderately Underrated" list has a ceiling of 10,000."I'm actually glad there are lists that tie the word "underrated" (or "unappreciated," etc.) to a specific value (in this event: no. of GR ratings). One just needs to take a look some other lists to see how arbitrary things can become if there is no attempt at defining what "unappreciated" actually means (even if only for purposes of the list in question); see eg.. this one: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/47... ...
ETA: I've taken the liberty to amend the list description to include links for the three lists you created over the weekend, so as to make it easier to find them -- hope you don't mind.

The problem is that "unappreciated" can also mean "disliked by many." I do like that you've defined clearly what you mean by "underrated," since "under the radar" obviously did not work for that other list.

Entered by someone who didn't bother to read the list description. The person in question is in for a surprise -- only 1 out of the books entered by them is within the parameters. All the others are up for deletion ...
Deleted for exceeding the 100 GR ratings maximum:Collected Poems

Bettie wrote: "we are all capable of mistakes made in a rush however just what is so hard about reading and understanding perimetres - we pride ourselves on our reading skills do we not!?"You'd think that's a given on a site like this, but creating and monitoring lists has tended to convince me otherwise ...
(Think we should hire the Red Queen for this purpose? She could even bring that nifty li'l axe ... :) )
yes - let the red queen take the grief - hang abou a mo - I think I have some thing that will do...BBL
Hah! Very nice.Think Alice would agree about being a pawn in anybody's domain, though?
P.S. That knight piece only gets itself blasted by not sticking to its prescribed moves on a chessboard btw. ... it could lead the queen a pretty dance if it were just to stick to "2 to the side and 1 forward/backwards," or "2 forward/backwards and 1 to the side" -- that's the one direct move the queen herself can't make!
Hey, I didn't get any notifications for any of this fascinating dialogue! I set it to; it even says so right now, above the comment box. Sorry to have missed the fun.Er ... but actually the reason I dropped by is I just started a list for New York Times and Publishers' Weekly bestsellers with fewer than 100 ratings: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/19...
It's mostly older stuff, of course ... but it's interesting to see just how far off the radar once-hot books can fall.
That's a great list, Alessandra, and you put so much work into creating it! I'll see about contributions as soon as I have a moment. As far as notifications go, even if you add a list (or group discussion thread, etc.) to your update feed, GR will only send you one "comment" notification by mail until you visit the list the next time. In other words, a notification you receive by mail may mean that only one person commented on the list, or one person posted a comment, another person responded, and a merry dialogue ensued. Then again, once you've revisited the list (following the link included in your email notification from GR) -- and in fact, every time you refresh the list in your browser -- that will "free" the way for another email notification once the next comment is posted ... and so on.
An easier way to check what is going on on a given list or discussion thread is by clicking on the little "g" (= "Goodreads") symbol on top of every page of this site (next to the symbols for friend requests, personal messages and your own profile page). That will open up a java screen showing all your notifications, similar to the overlay screen you get when you click on the "add book/author" link above the comment field at the bottom of every page (or when you edit your reviews, etc.) -- on that overlay screen you can actually see whether one or several persons have posted on a given list (or group discussion thread, etc.).
This latter feature is a newer one ... I suspect when they created the original email notification feature, they didn't want to clutter people's inboxes the way it used to happen with Facebook and some of the other social networking sites in the early days (and still does with FB to a certain extent, as a matter of fact). The newer feature is making it much easier to check back on GR pages you're interested in -- the downside being, however, that you actually have to be logged into GR already to access it. It's faster than the email notifications thing, too, though ... a good thing, overall! :)
I have linked to this list from Underrated Bestsellers, Fewer Than 100 Ratings.Whenever I follow discussions, I check the notification only box, so I don't get emails at all, just notifications when I log in. I click on the little "g" whenever I see red numbers there ... Those were the numbers that were missing.
I suppose I could just remember to check the "g" regularly.
Themis-Athena wrote: "Removed, for exceeding 100 ratings:Ritournelle de la faim

Woohoo, and congrats to them for reaching 101 ratings!
I have to admit to a certain hope that these lists will atrophy as more people find and read underrated books.
(...Well, the bestseller lists maybe not. They're at least partially a fossil record of peculiar tastes of the past.)
But these lists have a lot of good reads.
Celestial Harmonies just got 101 ratings! I'm glad for Esterhazy, this book is amazing. And we do have three other Esterhazy's books in this list.
Deleted for moving outside the ratings scope of this list:The Fall Of Public Man
The Burnt-Out Town of Miracles
