With the market, with the writing, with yourself. I've often felt in an awful hurry to tell my stories and get my work out there in front of readers, so I understand the urgency we so often feel as writers. But it takes time to write the kinds of truths we want to call literature. Settle into the work and trust the writing to reveal itself to you -- trust yourself to write it. (less)

It's rarely an intentional thing, but you have to start with the intention so you can train yourself to know when you've just seen or heard something that wants to become a story. So I watch the world and take inspiration from all sorts of moments: a scene in a movie, a lyric in a song, a conversation in a coffeehouse, a walk in the woods, a lost toy in the dirt at the playground, a sudden memory from my childhood.

I also love writing exercises, and when I'm trying to write in those workaday writing hours when I just need to get words on the page, whether I'm inspired or not, I'll turn to writing exercises. My favorites are the ones that rely on randomness and force me to switch my brain off and just ride along wherever the words lead me.(less)
