Wasn't the SCW the cause taken up by the proto-hippies of the 30's in New York? I think of the with-it people Joseph Mitchell writes about in Joe Gould's Secret. And the Brits, the late-blooming Bloomsbury types, didn't they put out some fictive accounts ? This is a great list to study on and come back to.

The Forging of a Rebel is an excellent book, but it is autobiography, not a novel, so probably shouldn't be on the list.
Evidently not. People put fiction on non-fiction lists, and non-fiction on fiction lists, and Twilight everywhere.
Given the importance of the use and misuse of language in the novel, and Orwell's experiences of propaganda (how the POUM were represented in the republican press, for example) I don't think it's too tendentious to see the influence, slight though it may be, of the Spanish Civil War in 1984.
new book: historical novel about the daily life of a child during and after the Spanish Civil War. Tittle: Breaking the Silence Author: Maria J Nieto. If you are interested in the terrible details of the war, and the tyranny suffered by a six year old child, you will like the book.Amazon, iUniverse, Google etc.

Although it has been quite a long time ago for this one too, the only one I'm 100% sure about is the Hemingway one (For Whom the Bell Tolls), .
