Add it. We have the opportunity to do that. And looks like there are 2 of you who would vote for it. However, people would need to look farther than the first 100 books to find it.

And yes, Mike, I agree
"The Books I (We) Liked". Best Books Ever may be a little pompous.
However, if I could only have one or 2 books to read, I would definitely opt for scriptures. How many times can you read Harry Potter or Twilight?? Just my opinion.

message 752: by Adam (new)

Adam The Lightning THief should defenitely be on this list. I gonna add it.

message 753: by Adam (new)

Adam I checked- The Lightning Thief is 325 on this list. Now thats insane- only 30 voters!!!

Mike (the Paladin) Neither do most of us. But we don't need to have a "censor" I don't think. Just ignore offensive remarks (so far that's possible they aren't 10 pages long or causing problems with discussion for those who choose to ignore them). The Book of Mormon, the Koran, the Bible all are valid books I assume and this is a list based simply on popular vote.

Don't take it so seriously.

Joe Tyborowski If you enjoy reading Potter, there are two excellent Fantasy authors that you may be interested in,,,David Eddings and Robert Jordan..they both have captivating well written series!!! Jordons are a little more elaborate, but also more intreging and captivating...Both have numerous volumes, but once you start the series, you will probably want to continue..read them about ten years ago, and like a great movie, thinking of reading them again...

Mike (the Paladin) Case in point. I love fantasy (heroic, epic, etc.) but I found Jordan's series to start out wonderfully only to crash and burn. I can only hope Sanderson can tie it up. Eddings I read one series by and it also left me cold... But many love both these writers...that's the whole point here. To each his own. Very often what one loves another can't stand. This is a list based on a popular vote.

Joe Tyborowski Yes Mike understand that we all have our personal views!! Thanks!! I enjoyed them, but also enjoyed the bio The True Story of Mao, which would bore alot of people to death!!Wild Swans was also phenomenal.. Just trying to provide others a larger spectrum of fantasy books to read, and enjoy..Would appreciate anyones ideas of great books or series!!

message 762: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Dec 28, 2009 06:43PM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) My reading tends to be somewhat eclectic... among fantasy series I've liked, well among YA books: Cornelia Funke's Ink Heart series is good I also like the Charlie Bone series, also called Children of the Red King by Jenny Nimmo.

For adult fantasy (other than the Lord of the Rings) my favorite would probably be Elizabet Moon's Paksinarrion trilogy. The Black Company books by Glen cook are also among books I like.

Of course that brings us back to the point I wanted to illustrate, who knows if you'll like what I love? :-)

Check my book list...maybe I can look at yours. One of the big reasons I come here is for book recommendations.

message 764: by Jeff (new)

Jeff I really wish that all you Twilight-Morons would shut up. Read a real book.

The Book of Mormon is openly recognized as a very influential book in American history. It doesn't have to be Mormons conspiring to bring it to the lime light.

message 766: by LauraJean (new)

LauraJean This list is missing most of the best books ever.

message 767: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I thought this list was way to long. I mean who has time to get through the whole thing. The person that did this went way over board.

Mike (the Paladin) Individuals place names on the list. It's not an authoritative list someone came up with.

message 769: by Erik (new)

Erik Twilight? Seriously?
A Tale of Two Cities and Twilight should not be on the same list.
EVER.

message 770: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Rossi I agree. Where's The Shack?!

Mike (the Paladin) Out by the river in the fishing camp.... :-)

Yes I know about the book The Shack (It's on my book list). I was just joking, really.

message 772: by Joe (new)

Joe Tyborowski I guess best book(s) are ones that endure time and generations..i.e.Shakespeare,the Bibles(all denominations)Dickens,Faulkner,Steinbeck,Buck,Cooper etc..BUT judging literature is a subjective matter, even in Lit Criticism class..SO everyone has a "justifiable" opinion in what is best for them!!!..Best book I have read is probably more appropiate..if you add "recently" read it changes the story..so no one is right or wrong, its great to see people still are reading and enjoying literature!!

message 773: by Casimir (last edited Jan 05, 2010 07:04PM) (new)

Casimir Radon Twilight? The King James Version of the Bible? The DaVinci Code? The Book of Mormon? Ick.

Mike (the Paladin) Like many others I don't see the gripe with the BoM (I'm not a Mormon). While I don't agree with it, it is at least an important historical text. As for the Bible, the KJ version especially is also considered a literary masterpiece.

All that aside, I keep telling people...this is a list compiled from popular votes. People are putting down their favorite books. Of course we'll disagree. If it were really a list of the best books of all time there would probably be a lot fewer recent efforts on it. It is more accurately a list that maybe should be called People's Favorite Books.

Everybody who posts seems to be getting bent out of shape over something on the list. The list isn't authoritative. It's just popular opinion.

message 775: by Casimir (new)

Casimir Radon The King James version is a shitty, and biased translation.

Mike (the Paladin) Just to let everyone know I plan to ignore flamers. I believe the language we use to express ourselves tends to reflect our intelligence and reasoning ability.

message 777: by Casimir (new)

Casimir Radon Mikey is quite frenchified.

message 778: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Stupid twilight. Get over it people, they are a fad and will die down soon

message 779: by Joe (new)

Joe Tyborowski If you like to read autobiography-biograpy books two I would recommend are the "Untold Tale of Mao", and "Wild Swans"..by Chang..just finished both..great revelations into Chinese culture..and the "real" story of how Mao constructed/destruct China..You will see how fortunate we are.."Wild Swans" encompasses three genertions of diverse, and very interesting generations of women in China..

message 780: by Tim (new)

Tim Twilight .... in the best books ever
ROFLMAO

message 781: by HellDal (new)

HellDal Tired/annoyed with Twilight. I seriously do not understand how people like this, it is unoriginal and nothing happens in most of the book(s), not to say that it is badly written. Are we that retarded when it comes to good literature? - granted most of these Twilight lovers are preteens with no better knowledge,- not that I'm an expert in literature myself, but come on!!
p.s. no offense to anyone just my opinion

Mike (the Paladin) We've talked about it before. This isn't an authoritative list, it's just popular vote. The list is what people like. if all they've read is stuff like Twilight they have nothing to compare it to. I sort of live in hope that coming here they may decide to try some of the books reviewed here.

message 783: by Gaby (last edited Jan 12, 2010 12:37AM) (new)

Gaby I can't believe Twilight Saga is up there. No offense to the Twilight fans, but if you believe that Twilight is the best book you've ever read, you should consider broadening your reading scope.
I'm also disappointing by Harry Potter being so high on the list, I'm a Harry Potter fan, but I don't really think that they belong in the top 50.
Other than that, I'm pretty happy for the most part.
:( Don Quixote shouldn't be number 84, it should AT LEAST be included in the top 10.

Mike (the Paladin) I actually said the same thing a few entries back. Like I said by being here one hopes that reading habits might expand.

message 785: by Grace (new)

Grace Kirsten wrote: "I'm annoyed with Twilight. Extremely

I agree. I can't believe Twilight series is on this list. The list is "Best Books Ever" not "My Favorite Guilty Pleasure Novel." People can like different books, but when you look at the writing of Dickens or Fitzgerald (pretty much anyone) and compare it to Meyer's Twilight, Dickens and Fitzgerald win. Hands down.

message 786: by [deleted user] (new)

i like warrior cats

Mike (the Paladin) I've never actually met any????

:-)

message 788: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette I've read 30 of these - out of 100 -- and how many more books in the universe?.....obviously, I am way behind.

message 789: by Tara (new)

Tara It makes me physically ill to see Twilight in the third position. It might be a wonderfully romantic story, but it should never beat the classics.

And the world's IQ takes a simultaneous plunge.

Mike (the Paladin) I think TV has something to do with it.

:)

message 791: by Christian (new)

Christian We need to start a new list. This is a joke. A bad one at that.

message 792: by Casimir (new)

Casimir Radon Mike wrote: "I think TV has something to do with it.

Are you, or are you not frenchified?

message 793: by Lee (last edited Jan 14, 2010 08:28AM) (new)

Lee The Book of Mormon is on the list because people have read it. It deserves a spot.

message 794: by Casimir (new)

Casimir Radon That's like people who claim to have read the Bible, they haven't.

Mike (the Paladin) Hi Semteacher, my point exactly. The list will slant toward books people like rather than objectively judged books, it has to.

Mike (the Paladin) Hi Semteacher, that's the point I was emphasizing, the list will naturally slant toward the books people like or value. It would be different on some objective list...of course I suppose a truly "objective" list would be next to impossible. But the point stands.

message 797: by Chelsea (new)
