K.R. Valgaeren (°1979) groeide op in de Vlaamse provinciestad Turnhout, waar hij actief was als filmjournalist, theater- en radiomaker. Na enkele jaren in Brussel te hebben gewoond, verhuisde hij in 2006 definitief naar Leuven, waar hij Nederlandse en Engelse Taal- en Letterkunde studeerde aan de Katholieke Universiteit. Daar specialiseerde hij zich in de Westerse Literatuur en de Editiewetenschap.

Sinds hij in het begin van zijn tienerjaren voor de eerste keer Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula te zien kreeg, en Enid Blytons boeken over The Famous Five begon te lezen, ontwikkelde hij een passie voor de negentiende-eeuwse literatuur en de Gothic Novel in het bijzonder. Het was het begin van een levenslange studie in en een onvoorwaardelijke liefde voor de griezelliteratuur.

Vijf jaar lang werkte hij aan De Ziener: zijn debuut dat in 2011 verscheen en in 2012 prompt de Schaduwprijs won die jaarlijks wordt uitgereikt aan het beste spannende debuut van de Lage Landen. Het boek was een succes en werd driemaal herdrukt. In 2012 verscheen het vervolg, Bloedlijn, dat eveneens werd bedolven onder lovende commentaren van critici en lezers.

Vervolgens bleef het vier jaar stil, hoewel er naarstig werd gewerkt aan Seance, dat in februari 2016 verscheen en enkele weken later reeds herdrukt moest worden. Met Seance leverde Valgaeren opnieuw een interessante mix af tussen het bovennatuurlijke, het waar gebeurde en het betere detectivewerk. Datzelfde jaar belandde het boek op de shortlist van de Harland Awards Romanprijs, die jaarlijks wordt uitgereikt aan het beste Nederlandstalige werk in de verbeeldingsliteratuur.

In 2018 verscheen Blackwell: zijn vierde Gothic Novel en het begin van een tweeluik over de mysterieuze onderzoeker Jericho Blackwell dat zich afspeelt in het Engeland op het einde van de negentiende eeuw. Het boek werd genomineerd voor de Hercule Poirotprijs.

In het najaar van 2019 verscheen Engelenlust: een duistere roman over het leven en de dood van een necrofiel. Een jaar later verscheen het langverwachte vervolg op Blackwell: Het offer van Scarlington. Ook dat boek werd genomineerd voor de Hercule Poirotprijs.

In het voorjaar van 2022 verscheen een geheel nieuwe en herwerkte editie van De Ziener bij Uitgeverij Houtekiet. Het boek werd voorzien van een nieuw nawoord. In het najaar verschijnt een nieuwe editie van Bloedlijn met extra hoofdstukken.

De duistere thrillers van K.R. Valgaeren zijn ondertussen een vaste waarde geworden in het literaire landschap van Vlaanderen en Nederland. Valgaeren hanteert een meesterlijke stijl, waarmee hij ondraaglijke spanning combineert met historische settings, eeuwenoude mysteries en klassieke gruwel in een nieuw jasje.

K.R. Valgaeren woont samen met zijn vrouw en kinderen in Leuven, waar hij in de beslotenheid van zijn bibliotheek aan zijn nieuwe roman werkt. Wanneer hij niet schrijft, rust hij met een boek uit in zijn chesterfield, of geeft hij toe aan zijn guilty pleasure en zet hij zich voor enkele uurtjes achter zijn gameconsole.
