I am a lifelong fan of science fiction and fantasy. I learned to read early and so long ago that I don't remember not knowing how. I have an A.B. in Biology, and I attended the Clarion West science fiction writing workshop but stopped writing science fiction and started trying to write science fact when I went to graduate school for Neuroscience. I have two school-age children and I recently retired from working full-time to pursue science education and outreach. I am exploring writing novels for kids and young adults to inspire them to think creatively about science, technology, and ecology. I play the violin in a community orchestra and I blog about being an adult returner to the instrument at www.violinist.com. ...more

I have more the problem of trying to winnow things down, quiet the voices of characters and topics in my head, and focus. For that, I find that going for a walk or taking a nap are best, if I can find the time. Or I just write stream-of-consciousness, like Morning Pages from _The Artist's Way_, until something takes shape.(less)

CoronaBach

Practice day 33/100. With metronome, tuner, and mask. This situation was feeling very metaphorical today. I am tired of the pandemic, tired of wearing a mask, tired of playing unaccompanied Bach alone in my room. And, I was feeling especially resentful of not being able to take all the liberty with the tempo that I wanted.

My teacher wanted me to play with the metronome, and so I did, its inexorabl

Henry David Thoreau
“The morning, which is the most memorable season of the day, is the awakening hour. Then there is least somnolence in us; and for an hour, at least, some part of us awakes which slumbers all the rest of the day and night... All memorable events, I should say, transpire in morning time and in a morning atmosphere. The Vedas say, “All intelligences awake with the morning.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden or, Life in the Woods

Susan Cain
“I had always imagined Rosa Parks as a stately woman with a bold temperament, someone who could easily stand up to a busload of glowering passengers. But when she died in 2005 at the age of ninety-two, the flood of obituaries recalled her as soft-spoken, sweet, and small in stature. They said she was "timid and shy" but had "the courage of a lion." They were full of phrases like "radical humility" and "quiet fortitude.”
Susan Cain, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

Rachel Naomi Remen
“Wounding and healing are not opposites. They're part of the same thing. It is our wounds that enable us to be compassionate with the wounds of others. It is our limitations that make us kind to the limitations of other people. It is our loneliness that helps us to to find other people or to even know they're alone with an illness. I think I have served people perfectly with parts of myself I used to be ashamed of. ”
