Ghost Dance
As one decade ends and another begins in Montana, Dawn’s life shifts in a direction that will shape her life in the years to come. In December 1989, she starts to come into her own. She’s learned skills that will provide a living for herself and teen daughter, and launches into a career on a huge neighboring ranch. By 1996, she’s Ranch Foreman and has earned the grudging respect of most of the ranch hands.
Despite that, Dawn continues to be swept up in dreams that aren’t hers. She’s haunted by the doomed Ghost Dancers. Among them the Dreamer, a young woman who has collapsed into a trance. She shares a message of rebirth and invincibility with the red chestnut Dog Soldier, the young lone Mustang stallion, whose blue eyes can see spirits. He reads sign language which Dawn comes to understand. Also visiting her is the tragic bloody-handed ghost of Brown Weasel Woman, a young woman of the Blackfeet who became a legendary war chief until she was killed by men who needed to eliminate a woman of power.
However, Dawn isn’t the only one courting madness, This is a story of ghosts who echo through lives and dreams, and a tale that grounds itself in a woman’s erotic awakening, overshadowed by a man’s descent into insanity.
