Hannah West is the author of young adult novels including The Nissera Chronicles series and The Bitterwine Oath. The inspiration to write fractured fairy tales came from reading and watching everything from Robin McKinley and Gail Carson Levine to Robin Hood: Men in Tights. I loved Disney movies and fairy tales and soon realized writers could spin them into whole new stories. But the inspiration for this book specifically popped up when I was studying abroad in France in 2010. The castles and the snow and just the magic of living in such an old and beautiful place put me in the mindset of dreaming about fantasy. I started writing about the kidnapped girl getting taken through the snowy woods toward an ominous and deadly lake. I didn't know where the story was going, but during French grammar glass I looked at the Disney princess pencil my parents had sent me in a care package and saw Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty together. The idea to tie their two stories into an epic tale of war and politics struck me suddenly. I knew the kidnapped girl I'd already written would be a shapeshifter posing as both of the princesses' fairy godmothers, but more than that, a hero having to pull political strings to save her homeland. The premise just fell into place!
