I just never understand post-modernism. I like to read it now and then, in the same way that I like to press on a bruise. To be honest, I kind of hated this book. I wanted the doctor to just shut up and get out of the way and let the other characters have their story. But that’s not how Barnes wrote it. The penultimate chapter, "Go Down, Matthew," in which Nora tells Matthew how much her heart has broken over her love for Robin, was the strongest. If only the entire book had been like that

No clue why this is regarded as some kind of seminal work in queer literature. It’s certainly queer, but not in the way the gushing Winterson considers it in her foreword.
It’s kind of very loosely about the love of two women for each other, but then it’s not even really about that. In fact, you’d be hard pushed to say that it’s about anything at all.

There's no way I got everything out of this book. I haven't read enough poetry or lived enough. But this is still pretty amazing, dense, and occasionally terrifying. I think of it as a companion piece to the 90-pg Purgatory chapter in the fifth or sixth volume of In Search of Lost Time.

Well, maybe I was reading it the wrong way but it felt really long despite its length. Ugh, it almost bored me to death. I did't mind the absurdness, though.
