This is the masterly work of the master of English literature and literature for all time I believe. It is complex but not complicated. The characters and their situations intertwine. The "mutual friend" has three identities and dark but not dangerous secrets -- he is only seeking truth in his life after all. This story of money, transformation and rebirth kept me from beginning to end. Dickens stories are never the shortest on the shelf, but you are not sorry for spending time with them. ...more

Haven’t read any Dickens for a while, not since Hard Times almost five years ago to be exact and this was the second time that I attempted this particular tome.

The first time, I just couldn’t get into it. I found it wordy and the characters didn’t hold together for me. I lost interest, got confused and it came to an abrupt halt.

I agree with criticisms that it gets a bit long-winded and winding at points - it's Dickens at his most Dickensian, and the run-on sentences are really over the top at times! This is one of the VERY few Charles Dickens books that I would actually read again. As his last, and largest, book, this is quite impressive. The story really draws you in... would totally recommend it for anyone who likes involved drama with a relatively happy ending.
