This book belongs in the pantheon of "What the hell am I reading?" books, and I consider this a good thing, so five stars. It wraps things up a bit...but there could easily be a series and I hope one day Mr. Clines will revisit that idea.

Because it's the idea, much like the building, which powers this book. The actual writing might merit a star less than the book overall and there is a slow build (pun not intended) to when things go from "hmmm, that's weird" to (view spoiler)

Nate has a dead end minimum wage job in expensive L.A., so when he hears about a cheap apartment to let, he jumps at the chance. So it's in a quirky old building, the building manager is odd, and some of his neighbours are a little unusual. But as soon as Nate starts peering under the surface he finds out that things are a lot more than quirky...

This is a really solid book, which I really can't write anything about the good bits, without royally spoiling it. Let's just say any book that c

This story was slow starting, but once it got going and we met all the ensemble cast, the story moved along with merit. Nate moves into the historic Kavach building, and Discovers quirky characters and a very quirky building with a lot of strange things. What happens when your curiosity gets the best of you? Well Nate and his new neighbors find out after they begin a systematic exploration of their strange building, trying to find out just what the heck is going on with all the quirky and creepy ...more

If it wasn’t for Ray Porter I would have given up on this a few hours in. The story, a group of people living in an apartment building in LA notice strange things about the building and decide to investigate, was intriguing. I was expecting a spooky tale with a bit of weirdness, but there was no spookiness, no tension, just a little curiosity and then when the reason behind the weirdness was revealed I was just bored. I suppose in the end it does fit in the horror genre but it takes around 7 hou ...more

I found this to be a very accessible Lovecraftian/ Mythos story. There was a nice amount of mystery and weirdness, but it was still very readable without needing to engage the brain too much. The idea of the building was cool, and I liked the tenants, but felt there could have been a bit more character development.

This book was a surprise hit. It presented mystery after mystery that kept me guessing what would happen next. The twists at the end were quite a surprise but enjoyable.
