Five stars because this is a book I absolutely couldn't wait to get back to reading when I was busy with something else. A post-apocalyptic story set in England, and, as one reviewer put it: Takes hold of you and doesn't let go!

Two criticisms:
1. The action is a bit relentless. Kudos to the author for maintaining roughly 400 pages of nonstop crisis-mode, but it can undermine the emotional catharsis, when there are new attacks every few paragraphs.
2. Not sure exactly what's going on with the gender dynamic, casting almost all your protagonists and antagonists as women. Not necessarily a problem, but something that does jump out at the reader.

I actually saw the movie on Netflix before reading the book. I enjoyed this unique take on zombies both in book and in movie format. Doesn't hurt that there is a fungal aspect - taking actual zombie-like behavior in the animal kingdom and using it to fit the human spectrum. The characters are strong and the story moves at a rapid pace.
