The upshot: flawed but enjoyable, and shockingly sexy.

I read a lot of spaceship books. I read a lot of smutty spaceship books.

Honor Among Thieves, which is marketed as a YA sci-fi thriller (and published by the same imprint as The First Cat In Space Ate Pizza) has the most sensual human/spaceship relationship I have read in a hot minute.

It’s not graphic or “spicy,” but Zara and her Leviathan, Nadim (an alien who is also a human-habitable spaceship) share a psychic mind meld that involves so much The upshot: flawed but enjoyable, and shockingly sexy.

It’s not graphic or “spicy,” but Zara and her Leviathan, Nadim (an alien who is also a human-habitable spaceship) share a psychic mind meld that involves so much emotional bleed that it has our spunky independent needs nobody hard scrabble Future Detroit protagonist considering sleeping on the floor on, like, her second night on board because it’d be just like a snuggle. I mean, know Anne Aguirre from her sci-fi and shifter romances, and I was _still_ surprised by the levels of not-technically-sexual sensual intimacy going on in this book.

As someone who read almost all of Anne McCaffrey’s catalog before graduating high school, I feel qualified to say that leaving this lurking in the YA section is going to jumpscare at least a handful of teenagers into some very… specific… fictional interests later down the line.

Ultimately I enjoyed this novel, but I think it had some pretty major issues with the pacing and structure. Honor Among Thieves spends a lot of time and energy on Zara’s life in the week leading up to her getting picked to be one of Nadim’s two human companions, focusing on a whole set of characters that later only serve to make Zara desperate enough to accept being drafted into a space program she hates. The premise of the novel makes it clear from the jump that Zara’s going to go to space without any of the characters we see in the first few chapters, making the whole arc feel purposeless and interminable.

I also thought that Zara’s relationship with the other human, Beatrix, was severely underdeveloped, flipping from “she’s a stick in the mud rules follower who I have nothing in common with” to “she’s my best friend (other than the spaceship who I share a brain with sometimes) and I would die for her” with hardly a whisper of friction between the two states. If this had been a romance novel, this would have been more forgivable, I think. ...more
