I have read all of this author's books and this might be the best one and the most fleshed out. It was slow-paced as his other books but got better half way through. The book within the book that talks about the past in the haunted house was really suspenseful, creepy and sometimes scary. Scary as in you don’t want to read it alone in the dark. I like it when I try to guess the killer and I'm wrong. I appreciate a book that makes me fuss or exclaim out loud.
This was a fast paced book that didn't get bogged down with too many unnecessary descriptions. (Authors: I don't need to know that spoons look used and what makes the narrator think that way.)
I wasn't the biggest fan of the protagonist, but I still enjoyed the ride. This was a pretty decent "ghost" story for the season. ...more

I gave it 4 stars because it got the job done... it scared me. If spooky is your jam, then this is for you. Smooth writing, and it reads very quickly. The characters are not deep, thankfully, or else I think I would've been even more spooked.
