"That was the thing about lies: they demanded commitment. Once you lied, you had to stick to your story."

This is a powerful story, centered around parents and our struggles. But it's a rough story. It really made me look at parents and kids and really analyze - how we judge each other but also ourselves. Are we enough? Are we doing enough? Are we perfect parents? Do we get tired sometimes, not be our best, most patient selves? Do we struggle?

This book deserves a longer review than this. This was more a literary fiction than a mystery. And it was more successful as literary fiction with more compelling female characters than their male counterparts. There was a lot going on here and perhaps too much to really deal with all of the varied issues in a meaningful way. The mystery part was disappointing but the mothers were done well.

After much contemplation I give this book 3.5 stars. It has given me more to think about than previously thought. I am glad I read it.
