5+ well deserved stars. Let me start this review by stating that I have read two others (A man called Ove and My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry), and Beartown blows them out of the water. This is truly an unforgettable novel. What a story! I felt completely wrapped up in these characters, the atmosphere of the setting, and the passion for the community's undying love for hockey! My first Backman novel. I usually love small town settings in books, but I'm not a sports fan.
Another one of those books that's hard to rate. If I were in my teens I'd probably loved this, but now with 30 I rolled my eyes at so many things in here - especially at all the hockey culture surrounding the town. Backman writes about it as if those people are in the mafia, it was so over the top. Also the bullying going on in school felt so weird, like what grandpas think young people behave like. I w ...more

Loved the hockey part of the story-what great descriptions by Backman. I could hear and smell and feel all that was going on-on and off the ice. I think the love of hockey can represent may aspects of life. Yes, I am known to love a coming of age tale, which this is. But this is not the traditional YA novel. It is much more than that-it's about life. Win or lose...and the choices we make...
