A perfect blend of humor sprinkled with a dash of melancholy. This book has a lot of laugh out loud moments.

Well crafted and compelling story line with loveable characters. Eleanor may be one of my favorite characters ever - so much to relate to if you’ve ever experienced tragedy. One of my favorite reads (well, listens) this year.

What a wonderful book! I have to admit, it starts out a little painfully but once the story gets going you won't want it to end. Eleanor Oliphant is a very "unusual" woman who has survived a huge childhood trauma which leads her to be considered rather odd, even though it's really the fact that she has never learned correct social cues. A random encounter with her company's IT guy and an old man collapsing in the street from a heart attack and suddenly her life is completely changed forever and ...more

Enjoyed the book

I would say I enjoyed the book but it didn’t have enough of a twist for me. I as waiting for the reveal and it was predictable.

Definitely wasn't the story I assumed it was - and that was a good thing. It was more emotional and contained a darker humor than I expected and later came to enjoy. In the beginning I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to like Eleanor, but then, I came to realize I think Eleanor disliked herself too. And by the end I was tearing up from happiness as she was too. I pretty much cried through the last 50 pages. It was definitely an emotional roller coaster of twists and personal growth. Little pi ...more

In the end, what matters is this: I survived.

This was difficult to read in many parts, especially when you start piecing together why the main character is so different.

I almost gave up on it but because everyone freaking loves this book, I kept going and it pulled me in. Devastatingly sad but heartfelt and wonderful all the same.

And it had a twist at the end, totally unnecessary but always a bonus. It’s not major but it does cause you to think more about clues you missed earlier in the book.

This book was just so sad.
It is well-written but it's not a happy story. There are a few observations that Eleanor makes about the world at large that will make you chuckle. It's like she's an alien landing in Scotland who is trying to assimilate without a translator.
