I like the setting very much and the mystery was pretty good even if it's rather slow. However, the characters annoy me so much!! It didn't quite start out that way though as I think they were okay at the beginning but halfway through, I was getting quite frustrated with all their choices.

This book straddles multiple genres, sitting uneasily on all of them; if I kept a "steampunk" shelf, I'd put it there also. What kept me entranced were two things. First, the mystery of the watch protagonist Thaniel Stephenson finds in his room, and the role it plays in future events; and second, Thaniel's relationships - first with Keita Mori, and then with Grace Carrow. Thaniel himself seemed not too interesting, a rather ordinary person; but he certainly drew fascinating people (and events?)
