Island of the Blue Dolphins is the story of a young Native American girl that is left behind when her tribe leaves their island home. She survives using many of the skills she learned from watching the adults in her tribe. It is a beautiful story about survival with a very strong female character. I loved the way O'Dell described the island. His writing was beautiful and moving. The relationship between the lonely girl and the animals on the island was moving as she relied on them for sustenance

Karana is an Indian girl who lives on an island out in the Pacific Ocean along with her family and the rest of the tribe she belongs to. Required reading in 6th grade. I hated it. This was when I began to realize that even though I loved to read, books assigned by teachers usually weren't books I would love. I know a lot of people loved this when they were young, I just remember being bored to tears.
