What Members Thought
I think this book is so clever! The tension and suspense throughout the book is incredible, when it is all psychological mind games, and nothing actually threatening happening! Basically, this book is a tale of how women have no power and no identity in this society! It took me awhile to realize that we never even know the NAME of our narrator. She is of so little importance or worth in this British society, that she is not even worthy of a name! She becomes simply the second Mrs. Maxim de Winte

If I could I would say it was more like 3 1/2 stars. There were parts where I was really riveted and other parts just dragged on. I can't say I ever really liked the narrator, although I think it would be hard to go into a marriage so quickly and follow someone so beloved, she definitely did nothing to help herself...which was frustrating (and I had to keep telling myself that this book was written a long time ago). I also got frustrated with her constantly depreciating comments about herself.
