Unlike The Graveyard Book, which was the first Neil Gaiman book that I read, this one sucked me right in. By the end of the first ten pages, I already had several favorite quotes that I had read out loud to my sister and son. I fell in love with the way Neil Gaiman turns a phrase. Some of the examples of my favorite sentences are:

I was a bit apprehensive about reading this book, because horror is a genre I normally steer clear of. But -- as I've often found to be the case with Gaiman's work -- this was enough on the edge that I was almost always ok. I would happily have skipped hearing about some of the things a few of the characters enjoyed eating, but I survived them.
