I quite enjoyed this and also am left a bit...empty by it. The premise is fascinating, and the glimpse into 3 decades of Moscow and Russia from the 1920s-1930s was really interesting to me. It's also got me wanting to read more Russians so I started George Saunders book A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life, and I can already tell that's going to be a slow (one short story at a time) but very valuable read.

I’m happy to report that I finished another book! I am on a roll in 2023 after a reading dry spell lasting several years.
Unfortunately, the more I read A Gentleman in Moscow, the more I came to loathe it, or at least certain [several!] aspects. An epic weekend read. Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov is probably the world's last true gentleman. If the British literature produced Mr. Darcy, would it be fair to say the contemporary American literature produced Count Rostov? Probably not. This is just a personal review.
A must read for gentleman wanna-bes out there. If chivalry is not an archaic concept that is.

What a delight from beginning to end. Count Alexander Rostov survives the Russian Revolution of the early 1900s only to be confined to the Metropol Hotel for the rest of his life. It is wonderful to follow him as he makes the very most of his confinement and reveals that in all circumstances he is ever a gentleman.
