This book reminded me a great deal of Ocean's Eleven taking place in a fantasy setting (which is a good thing). I liked the way it played out and will be definitely going on to the next book in the series. While I've gone on record as not liking gritty and dark fantasy, the infusions of humor in this book conveyed by the witty on-liner helped to lighten the mood. And hey how could I not like a story about a band of thieves? A very good debut novel and I will definitely be reading the second in t ...more

This book was simply a lot of fun. The schemes of Locke Lamora were impressive, even after I've seen such films as Ocean's Eleven and The Italian Job.

It's part caper, part Robin Hood like tale, part epic fantasy, part Mafia-style pictoral of a Venice-like city. While magic isn't common, it's certainly used with a wallop when it is brought in. I compare it to Robin Hood, since the legends surrounding "The Thorn of Camorr", as Locke is known, say that he steals from the rich and gives to the poor

This is the novel every sixteen-year-old wants to read. And by "sixteen" I mean anyone who is chronologically sixteen or sixteen at heart. That probably means you (so long as you're not allergic to a lot of swearing and violence - if you can't handle this, find something else). No, it's not a coming of age novel. Not really. I'd pity the sap who had a childhood like Locke Lamora's - an orphan whose "family" was a band of child thieves before being sold to another "family" of thieves. But it is a ...more

When I first started LLL I had to put it down because I was still kinda slumping. I wasn't sure it was me or the book. It was me, this book is fantastic. The Locke is such an interesting character, a bloody hilarious great character.

Sooo many good quotes from this book. I have tabbed so much humor and sass. One minute I'm laughing then gasping with my hand covering my mouth because like a switch Scott Lynch can change the mood.

Can not wait to read the next book.

Scott Lynch, please stand over there next to Joe Abercrombie, George R.R. Martin, Brandon Sanderson, and Chris Wooding. You are now among my top five favorite contemporary authors of fantasy fiction.

I'm not going to attempt a review, since Stephen Sullivan says everything that needs to be said in his review here.

Let's just say five flawless stars for me. Highest recommendation!

I felt that this book and author is very similar to The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss other than the fact the book is harder to get into, and not as big of a hype. ...more

Excellent. Tied the heist, mob, revenge, and spy plots all together by the end. Simply a great book.

I really enjoyed this book. The mix of tricky crime caper and fantasy setting really was quite good. The characters are interesting and the plot was fascinating. Highly recommended for people that like both fantasy and mystery/crime novels.

8/25/14 - I finished reading this again over the weekend and moved straight into book two. My second reading just made me appreciate this book all the more.
