Joe Abercrombie’s Red Country has been one of my most anticipated reads since it was announced. While I definitely loved the First Law Trilogy it was Abercrombie’s previous novel The Heroes that really blew me away. Where as that first series was a riff on a conventional quest fantasy turned on its head The Heroes was an epic tale of war that was at in many ways both sprawling and constrained. The Heroes laser tight focus on a single battle (the preparations, the battle itself, and the aftermath ...more

4.5 Stars

I finished reading this a couple weeks ago and gave it some time to digest before I tried to write a review.

Red Country, by Joe Abercrombie

is likely my favorite fantasy fiction read to come out of the Big publishers this year (Orbit) I still mean to read a few more from TOR and PYR, but this will be pretty tough to beat.

Anyone else I really liked (published this year) is almost certainly indie.

I don't like giving away spoilers, but there are a few caveats to Abercombies books. The three standalone novels, Best Served Cold, The Heroes and Re

As another reviewer reminded, reading this is like playing in filth. Battle and blood is one thing, and nasty and dark is just fine, but spending all that time and investing in, trying to connect with, any player in this filthy world just plain left me disgusted and I couldn't get out quick enough. Pit & Ro are about the only redeeming characters present and their POV held minimal interest. If Joe's aim was to force every despicable type of human in and force me to choose the one least furthest ...more
