Man, Mr. Stephen King, the master of horror knows how to scare the pants off all you readers and still write a great story, I don't know how the man does it, it takes a special talent for sure!! While Doctor Sleep is nowhere near as good as King's original classic The Shining (where this is a followup), it was still a thrilling and scary read!

While Doctor Sleep is nowhere near as good as King's original classic The Shining (where this is a followup), it was still a thrilling and scary read!

Years have passed since Dan Torrance's traumatic experiences that took place up in

, in the secluded Overlook Hotel up in the Rocky Mountains. Now all grown up and still not coming to terms and facing his demons, Dan is following in his deceased father's footsteps as a raging alcoholic. Trying to live somewhat of a normal life, he has taken residence in New Hampshire and is now working in a local hospice, using his special gift known as the Shining to comfort the dying patients and preparing them for the afterlife, earning the nickname DOCTOR SLEEP!

But Dan will soon be facing something far more terrifying than he could imagine when he unexpectedly meets and befriends Abra Stone, a young girl who possesses a far more powerful shining. Abra is being targeted by a dangerous, ancient group known as the True Knot, who are killing anyone that has the shine to them and feeding off their Supernatural abilities and using them for their own destructive purposes. Dan must now reface his dark past and use his power to help Abra face her own demons and stop this evil cult that is being let by Rose the Hat, who is obsessed with hunting down Abra and getting her power for her own use.

Far better than the movie ever thought of being (I enjoyed the movie, Ewan McGregor played a great part) but the book was 100 times better! Dan Torrance has really come a long way since he was a little boy, Stephen King really did a good job developing his character, with him now being an adult, and Abra was also an interesting and complex character!

As I said up above, Doctor Sleep was nowhere near as good or nostalgic as The Shining, but it was a compelling read nonetheless! It will keep you up past your bedtime and by the end it will leave you wanting more! A must-read for SK fans!!

I read The Shining (again) before reading this, the sequel. However, I did not have any intention of comparing Doctor Sleep to its prequel. I always saw it as a separate book, but from the same family. Make sense?
I am giving it 4 stars mainly because of the ending. Not that the ending was disappointing, per se, but it felt a bit scattered, pieced together and definitely lacked the flow that the first 80% of the book had. My interest waned right at the end. This book went from a page turner to a ...more

Amazing! It was nice to see how Danny Torrance grew up! I don't expect revisiting old characters to be a trend for King, but I'd love to know how Ellie Creed and Charlie McGee turned out. ...more
