Thank you to Netgalley , Putnam and Kiley Reid for the advanced reader copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
I read this book in about two days and that was because I wanted to savor it. It was so good and :"unputdownable." It was such a great story where none of the characters were flawless, but they all made me think. There was such an important dialogue on race and privilege and also a great story line. I would highly recommend this book to everyone and I'm so glad it's my first one ...more

This one had so much potential but fell way short for me. I didn’t connect with the characters and the only relationship I enjoyed reading about was Briar’s and Emira’s. The opportunity to touch on race issues could’ve been explored in more depth but I felt like throughout the book we were in the head of an annoying character.

On the surface, this book is an easy, breezy coming of age novel that you can easily fly through. Reid cleverly weaves in themes of racism, feminism, and privilege making it deceptively hard-hitting.
We meet two woman, Emira Tucker and Alix Chamberlain. Emira babysits for Alix’s daughter Briar. When a late night “incident” at a grocery store where Emira is stopped by security while taking care of Briar, everything changes. I will say I was expecting a different story after this incident, but t ...more

After waiting for weeks I finally got my hands on Such A Fun Age. I was so excited to dive into this book, because there was so much buzz around it.
Half way through I kept waiting for the climax. It never came. The topics were heavy, especially in the high racial tension climate we are in at the moment. I understand the story and the relevance of white privilege and the view points of that through different eyes. The characters were hard to connect with and became less enjoyable as the story we ...more

My first thought for this review was that I really don’t know how I feel about this book. But after further thought, this is what I have:
I enjoyed the writing style that was easy, light, and had that page turning quality. It is a great quick read. I enjoyed the reoccurring topic of race and privilege brought up in the book, as well as the overall storyline. I connected and related to Emira, specifically in the career area, and loved the way that her character blossoms and evolves. I am dealing ...more

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I don’t love this book. It’s an easy read and the examination of liberal racism was thought provoking and a worthwhile conversation. But when the only character I really cared about is Briar, the 3 year old, it’s hard to get excited.
Part of me is left wondering if this was meant to be satirical. The Thanksgiving dinner scene was brilliant and painfully funny and if the whole book was written in this way then I’d have loved it. But I just never knew if I w ...more

This book is a quick read. The premise is that a young black woman, Emira, works as a nanny for a wealthy couple. She is very close to the young girl she is in charge of. There is some vandalism a Emira's employer's house so Emira is asked to take her charge to the grocery store while the police are doing their investigation. Emira goes to a high end grocery store with Briar. The security guard at the grocery store accuses Emira of kidnapping Briar. A video is made of the incident but Emira does
