This book was every bit as good as everyone has been saying! Certainly heartbreaking in its details, made even more so by the fact that such atrocities did occur back in the day. The writing was very good and kept you turning the pages wanting to see what would happen next.

This novel is based on the real-life adoption scandal surrounding the Memphis branch of the Tennessee Children's Home Society and its director, Georgia Tann. From 1920 to 1950, countless children were taken from their biological parents through nefarious and illegal means and put up for adoption, often at very high fees. While awaiting adoption, children were malnourished and mistreated and quite a few died.

Using a popular structure for current historical fiction, the author alternates two narr

This book probably could have lasted another 100 pages! There was a lot of skimmed info towards the end that could have used more in-depth treatment, and I had at least one unanswered question... what about the baby boy?

It also could have lasted another 100 pages because it was that good. The historic thread of the story was hard to read sometimes but eventually developed into a very redemptive storyline. The modern thread -as always for me in these dual timeline novels- fell a little flat and p

It's not me, it's you.

The category I now will assign any books to that I don't mesh with, because I'm one of the few humans who didn't connect with this story at all. It felt removed instead of heart-warming, almost like watching one's own life as an objective third party. The content is interesting, but not emotionally engaging enough to justify the depressing storyline. I'm not going to make excuses, this was a case of not meant to be.

Amazing! This book kept me engaged from the very beginning and the dual timeline unfolded the story brilliantly. I can see why this book was listed as one of the best of the year.

It is sad to know that this was based on true events and that children were taken from their families. I am want to read some of the recommendations used to research this topic that the author suggests at the end of the book.

Rather intense story about a true situation in Tennessee childrens home and a family that was torn apart, as the most vulnerable children were stolen and sold. Lisa Wingate does a great job, cover and title are great. Would have been a 5 bit a little too long.
