I listened to this one on audio book, read by Rosmund Pike. I enjoyed it although I thought it seemed somewhat disjointed at times, with some scenes/themes/plot strands under-developed and some sudden switches of scene. I found out why at the end when the narrator informed me it was abridged... I suspect whoever abridged it went a few steps too far. The Magician's Apprentice weaves interesting characters amongst fully formed backdrops with a language that allows the tale to unfurl effortlessly. There is plenty of intrigue and drama to kick the story off, however, things then slow right down and although I enjoyed the scenery, I needed some more action.
