Mary Shelley and her husband(Percy Bysshe Shelley) were residing in Switzerland next door to Lord Byron. It was an inclement summer and they spent a lot of time indoors listening to ghost stories, etc. They decided to each write their own. At nineteen Mary wrote this classic.
