I can't even talk about this yet. I am both saddened nearly to paralysis and inspired to work ever more diligently, with Mr. Stevenson's noble and compassionate voice in my conscience.

I would read this book again. And again. And again. It's almost too much for a person to take in at one time.
Bryan Stevenson founded the Equal Justice Initiative an organization that works to balance the justice system for people who have not received fair trials.
If children being charged as adults and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment doesn't raise your ire, if mentally challenged people being rushed through an overtaxed system doesn't roil your blood, if poor and often minority priso ...more

Without a doubt, one of the most powerful, transformative books I have ever read. It will take months for me to process it, which is good news for anyone who knows me. At the end of that time I will start encouraging (telling?) everyone I know or meet to read it. It is beautifully written, completely enthralling and only 314 pages.

Whatever you are reading right now, put it down, read this book, then go back to it. This account of fighting for rights of American citizens through a broken and corrupt judicial system rings timely and true.

Very glad this book was recommended to me, I hadn't realized that Bryan Stevenson had written a book. It was equal parts wonderful and heartbreaking. Heading to www.eji.org now to see if there's anything I can do to help.
"I tried to caution them against expecting too much from Charlie after his release. 'You know, he's been through a lot. I'm not sure he can just carry on as if nothing has ever happened. I want you to understand he may not be able to do everything you'd like him to do.'

I read this a while ago, but I wasn't sure how best to write a review so it's stayed on my list. I don't know what to say beyond what others have said. The work Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative do is so powerful and critical to so many lives. What happens in states like Alabama (and too many others), is a true horror show. The death penalty is barbaric and keeping people on death row indefinitely is nothing short of torture.
