This was an adventure from start to finish. I've read children's books of Peter Pan before and I've seen the Disney movie way back in the day and Hook with Robin Williams and Maggie Smith. To call me a Super Fan would be an over-statement. I wouldn't have called myself a lover of Pan or Neverland. Which has a disturbing reminder of Michael Jackson and his Neverland that he designed for his lost childhood. With all this in mind.....

Tiger Lily was told from the perspective of Tinker Bell but she couldn't talk. What?! So, it was her narrative of life on Neverland with her mad crush of Peter Pan and friendship of Tiger Lily. Tiger Lily? yeah, she's the little native that is truly a part of the story. I think I'll watch Peter Pan with new eyes next time my kids throw it in, though we only have it on VHS, yup that's how committed I am to Pan.

We've only seen Peter Pan from Wendy's view so this was a dirty change up and I couldn't stand WENDY in this version. Of course, she was taking Pan away from our native lady! This book is deeply rooted into the sky and earth or shall I say Neverland ground and lagoons. Its not clean, orderly, it barely has organized land segments where each tribe/group is allowed. It wasn't meant for government, aging, time, Christianity, or reality. So when these attributes are thrown in, chaos starts.

Since it is set in a fictional land. They don't follow our rules and mores. Pan kills people (mostly pirates). Tiger Lily may try to kill out of jealously. Its violent, depressing, lovely, otherworldly, and magical. I enjoyed this grimy take on Neverland. Does it make me want to pick up a copy Peter Pan or buy the Blueray? No, but it was warmly comforting and hard to put down. The cover is beautiful. Which is the opposite of what Tiger Lily represents. I kept going back and forth wondering if it is Tink on the cover not glowing but I know it must be Tiger Lily, that although she wasn't considered lovely by anyone, especially herself, This is the world that she belong in and that is beautiful.

I wonder if this will brew in my head for awhile. ...more

I'm so glad I finally got around to reading this book. It wasn't what I expected at all, in the best way possible. I didn't really know anything about it other than that it's a Peter Pan retelling, but I was not expecting the dark, twisted story that came. I loved Tiger Lily's character. To be able to build a character who you understand so well when she says so little is impressive. I loved the way the story was wound, how all the little details we know from the original story are woven in here ...more
