I love a strong heroine, and Poison Study definitely does not lack one. Yelena has lost it all, and almost her life. She is offered a job to save her neck from the noose, but it might only prolong her life for a short time. She becomes the food tester to the Commander, he’s the equivalent of a president/king, but his rule is more military then democratic/monarchy. Her job is to check his food and drink for poison, poison that could ultimately kill her. Yet she doesn’t cower in the shadows, she s ...more

It took a lot of thought process to even begin thinking what I want to say about Maria Snyder's book Poison Study. I am a reader that usually likes things to be told how it is rather than skirting around the edges to the actual truth. In this book you are given just that, nothing is ever sugar coated, you are thrown right into Yelena's ugly situations. And if you are looking for a book that starts off all sweet and cuddly then this book isn't for you. The setting takes place beneath a castle whe ...more

I really, really liked this book. It has some very dark parts, but that might be part of the appeal in its contrasts. It's about a young girl who is supposed to be hanged for murder and instead gets the chance to be the food taster for the king. Has some language. ...more

I finished this book fairly fast and it was a good read. I thought the book started off with a good plot, however, there were times in which it was rather boring. The strength of some parts of the plot is what kept me reading the book. The main character Yelena is still a mystery to me and still a mystery to herself which leads me into wanting to read the next book of the series. I just hope that it is able to keep me interested by getting into who she really is, and not leaving a lot of unanswe ...more

This is one of those hate-turns-to-love type of situations that I'm really into for some raisin. It's too bad the rest of the series is super bad and non-readable so I can't even find out what happens to Yelena and Valek. I tried to slog through the second book, but it made me not even care about what happens to them. #letdown ...more
