Morning Star was the perfect finale of the Red Rising trilogy, which are some of the best dystopian books I have ever read. I loved The Hunger Games trilogy, but these books take societal and class distinctions to a new level. I was amazed at the damning intricacies that the society built up around the color classes. And to put the entire Red Rising world in space? and a believable space at that? a completely overwhelming (in a good way) reading experience. I was so satisfied with the ending of Morning Star was the perfect finale of the Red Rising trilogy, which are some of the best dystopian books I have ever read. I was so satisfied with the ending of this book though, I was a little bugged at having to guess what Darrow's, Mustang's, Severo's, and Cassius' plan was. I always feel like a writer is being a little too coy when characters know information that the reader doesn't, especially when a story is told in first person and usually, what the first person narrator knows, the reader knows. But I forgave Brown of his writing methods when I realized from the moment Cassius attacked Severo in the prison bay that everything that was to follow, minus losing a hand, was part of Mustang's plan. I loved the ending and was so happy that my suspicions about a "baby" were true. Overall, I just can't say how much I loved these stories. I fell in love with the characters and the depth and sorrow they each had to experience to get to the end. I loved the message of forgiveness and living for more than hate and revenge. The story touched me deeply as the three books combined truly manifests the best and worst of human nature, with the best conquering the worst. Having said all of that, these books are not for the faint hearted. The amount of violence is devastating, but realistic when dealing with themes of hate, war, revenge, and the pride and weakness of humans. But to counteract that violence there was so much love and genuine searching for peace and purpose, causing me to overlook the violence, or to not at least let the violence guide my opinion of these stories. Having arrived at the end, I feel drained on so many levels. But it was all worth it. ...more
