Based on The 1001 Nights, parts of this book are stunningly brilliant, and parts are just okay. When Shazi channels the original Scheherazade in her story telling, she is amazing. The language is rich, and the characters are compelling. Once the plot drifts away from Scheherazade's tales, though, it sort of flounders along in an average teenage love/angst story. I really wanted to like this, especially since I've read such great things about it. However, I just couldn't get into it. There definitely needed to be more of an introduction for the characters, instead of just being thrust head first into the plot. Perhaps if the book had started a few days before Shahrzad was to marry Khalid, and she had had some interactions with Tariq and his friend (whose name I can't even remember) then I would have connected more with the characters and actually cared a
