Really 3.5 stars. I didn't hate this like I expected to after a lot of the reviews I originally read, but I can definitely see how this would be tough for some people to get through.

*slight spoilers?*

Mare is in a very dark place during this book, she cuts people off when she shouldn't, she simultaneously drowns in guilt while also feeling like she's better than everyone else there. oh my god, this book was so painful. this series is told in first person from Mare Barrow's perspective and boy is she so narcissistic that I felt like my eyes were going to hemorrhage. who refers to themselves consistently in third person (not a direct quote but: they fear the lightning girl)!?!? she kept placing immense value over her own head because she's "the lightning girl" and saying she is more important than any other person in the book. I kid you not.

I loved it! It feel a lot less typical dystopian YA books in this one and it that was really nice. I can't wait for the next one, it will be a long wait. But I can't wait to find out what happens, I feel there will be more twists and turns. ...more
