A lot of this is pretty realistic. Pretty good story overall. I was drawn to this because of the Alaskan setting. People are still running to Alaska hoping for a fresh start and many have no idea what to expect - many don't make it much past their first winter. Alcoholism and domestic abuse are still huge problems in both the small villages and the cities. ...more

The first half of this book felt like a slow paced psychological thriller where you knew the ticking time bomb that was Ernst could blow up any second. The second half was good but I also felt too emotionally manipulated. I enjoyed it while I was in amidst of it but in hindsight, might have been too much. Like Where the Crawdads Sing, I liked how the Alaska setting was a character in itself. ...more

Beautiful writing but too melodramatic for me. Parts of the plot were just too unbelievable. I hung in there and had a good cry at the end.
