Creepy how prophetic it was. I can easily see this happening in the U.S. of the fundamentalist whackjobs get their way.

Justifiably iconic, but takes far too long to establish the central premise.

I have had this book on my TBR for years, ever since I saw season one of the series. Of course, there are similarities to the series but there are some differences too.
The story is well ahead of it's time when you know it was written in the late seventies.
I enjoyed most of the book, as I have enjoyed the series too.
Why I gave it 4 stars is because there were parts that were a bit boring, her talking too much in her head and describing things I really didn't need to know or added to the story.

Beautifully written, haunting and a little bit of a scary read, I really enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale. This was an especially timely read for me, since it doesn't seem all that far-fetched given the hateful quality of the discourse that's going on in the political climate of America today paired with the double standards and hypocrisy that always accompany such rhetoric.

The story is told in the first person narrative, and I'm fairly sure we have an unreliable narrator. This works in the novel as
