Okay, I know. How did I ever get to my advanced age without reading any Jane Austen? Because I deliberately avoided reading Jane Austen, that's how. It took my friend Paul to look at me with amazment on his face and say, "I can't believe that you have never read anything by Jane Austen. My second or third read. This time around I definitely had a new understanding of Mr. Bennet and why exactly, while amusing, he is just as bad as the rest of his family. Still great as it always is. Austen's economy of language is amazing, and her characterizations are excellent.
