An incredibly fun read for me. Adventures within a game. Characters living in a gritty, hopeless world, trying to find an escape in a virtual world. Countless allusions to old school video games, MMORPGs, "virtual life" games like Second Life, as well as tabletope RPGs. Not to mention the 80s, a decade one may love or hate, but never forget if, like me, you've grown up during it.

This was a geek's wet dream, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

3.5 stars. Imagine the collapse of the world and everyone spending most of their lives and money on a virtual universe called OASIS. There were times when the story dragged, or the author was more busy in dropping tidbits of 80's pop culture than progressing the story. But for the most part, Parzival's pursuit of the Anorak's hidden Halliday egg was a fun trip. This book would most appeal to people who grew up in the 80's, are gamers, love 80's pop culture or sci fi/fantasy lovers. I didn't love ...more

This was a wonderful book to me. I have no clue why I waited so long to read it, but it was apparently written for people like me.

The book is full of 80's nostalgia through a dystopian view from the future. I was graduated from high school in the mid-80's, played D&D, dropped quarters in arcade machines, and the first computer I used was a TRS-80. I didn't play all the video games in the book, nor did I know all the movie and music references, but I knew a ton of them.

The story and the charact

Yup, I think the hype was right on this one. Ready Player One is insanely readable. I loved how the action flowed, and although I didn't have the crazy connection to the characters that I get from some books, I enjoyed myself immensely reading this. A lot of the '80s references were things I wasn't familiar with, but Cline did a great job of explaining things so that I wasn't left in the dark. And although I didn't always agree with Wade's choices, I definitely had fun reading about them. A+ for ...more

This is a fantastic read! I'm such a sucker for books that involve pop culture references and that is basically the premise of this book. Miix in there that it's also pulling from some clearly dystopian themes and you have a book made perfect for reading. I loved the plot. Ernest Cline's adventure was fast paced, filled with enough details and riddles to keep the reader engaged, and also pulled you back to some of the great things from your childhood. Even if you were never a gamer, children who ...more

For us sci-fi lovers, this book is a lot of fun. Even non-SF readers who love the '80's and/or video games, and/or the idea of virtual reality that is realer than real life, will enjoy it a lot. ...more

As a survivor of the 80's and a computer gamer turned game designer/producer, I don't know how I've overlooked this book for so long. It is so much fun!

I'm not even half-way through it yet, but I'm in a love-hate relationship with the audio version. Hate: because I could read it so much faster on paper and Love: because the reader is *perfect*.

I find myself reminded a lot of The Westing Game plot-wise (a favorite) and I'm hoping the endings will share the same twist.

As far as recommending it -
