John Cousen
An enjoyable book that tries to examine humanity from the viewpoint of non human characters. Both come across as extreme facets of human characteristics, though its difficult to imagine how else this could have been done.
The time and place was a new one for me, and led additional interest to the story, especially the differing immigrant cultures. The plot almost drifted into Romeo and Juliet territory, but managed to avoid it.
And apparently its book 1?

Asks the question, "Can you act against your fundamental nature? And if you can't are you responsible for the outcomes?"

Several characters find their own answers, but the book does not judge between them.

A detailed cultural and period work, but with magic.
