What Members Thought

Artist: Ni Anluain. Inspired by Nalini Singh's character Archangel Raphael
★★★★✩ I read Angels' Pawn first, thinking it a prequel, when really it is just a companion novella to Angels' Blood. For me, this was a disadvantage; while I loved Elena in this story, Raphael was not a very likeable character in that one, IMHO, and I wondered not how, but if Ms. Singh was going to be able to covert me to a Raphael fan. She did, but the going was rough.

I've heard great things about Nalini Singh as a writer, and this is the first book of hers I've read. It was a little hard to get into but after the first 30 pages or so I didn't want to put it down. I took a small break and then I finished the rest of the book in one sitting.
I liked Elena's strong-willed, stubbornness, and courage. She doesn't take any crap from anyone, even if she ...more

I actively disliked Raphael through the entire book, which made it hard to like this book, much less understand Elena's attraction to him. The ideas are interesting enough that I plan to read at least the next one and hopefully I will like Raphael better.
What I enjoyed:
* The world was unique and interesting.
* The hunters are all great characters.
What could have been better:
* Raphael. Just didn't like him one bit, nor did I like most of his people.
* The pacing was weird. It took forever to really ...more

As usual Nalini Singh has done a wonderful job of building a world with amazing characters and amazing stories. Why only 4 stars then you ask? Well, I wish there had been more character building. I wanted more details of Elena's past, and also Raphael's. I get the feeling that we will get more of that later, but it seems like that should have been a part of the opener.
I can't complain about it too much though, because Ms. Singh does these things for a reason and I am sure all will be revealed o ...more

Elena is a vampire hunter hired by the archangel Raphael to hunt a rogue archangel. Unable to decline the job, Elena becomes tangled in Raphael's world. The story is rather dark and I think that may be why I couldn't leap right into it. I liked Elena's spunk but often found Raphael to be too domineering and just a little off.

The fact that I have already purchased and downloaded the next 2 books in the series is a big clue to how much I liked this book. I really liked the fact that it's not in 1st person. I love UF but prefer 3rd person. Seems like the majority of UF series are in 1st person. I like to get some of the story from the other characters perspective. While I like good sex scenes, I like how Singh doesn't just toss them in just to have them. She works them in when they work with the plot.
