In 1985 Margaret Atwood published The Handmaid's Tale, a dystopian novel depicting a future United States (and most particularly, the New England area) where the government has been overthrown and replaced by a theonomy called the Republic of Gilead. It is implied that this has taken place in part as a response to the growing numbers of infertile people and those who have deliberately chosen not to have children. If I wasn't reading this for a Book Club meeting I would have put it down and not finished it after reading the first few chapters.

Republic of Gilead... Handmaids... Aunts... Commanders... Eyes... Mayday... the Wall... Guardians... Women's Salvagings and the list goes on. Too dystopian for me.

No feelings for any of the characters. No closure. The story skips from past to present and back again and again and again. Reminiscent to me of an adult version of The Giver by Lois Lowry which I thoroughl
