First published in 1986, Atwood’s novel describes an America much different but easily imaginable from today’s democracy. Offred tells her story of life as a Handmaid, in the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy, run by the Sons of Jacob. The birthrate has plummeted and the leaders of Gilead lay the blame on the “sinful” ways of women. Now Offred and other Handmaids are valued only as long as their ovaries are working. This book was scary and terrifying to think that at some point in the future our bodies could not be our own. The detail of the horrors that women were subjected to in this book just made me queasy the entire read. I mean the what-ifs are truly impossible for me to think about without getting the chills and just sick to my stomach. I did like the way the book was written and from her point of view it was interesting to feel almost stuck inside her head. As if I was viewing things as they happene

I have had this book on my TBR for years, ever since I saw season one of the series. Of course, there are similarities to the series but there are some differences too.
The story is well ahead of it's time when you know it was written in the late seventies.

This is a tough one to rate. I've clicked back and forth between 3 and 4 stars a few times.
What I can say for sure: This book affected me. Maybe part of that involves reading this book in 2016. It's been a tumultuous year personally for me and socially/politically for my country. I would also attribute it to Atwood's visceral, brutal writing. Her prose is somehow sparse yet loaded, packing a punch with every sentence. It took over one month for me to make it through the book (and it isn't long). ...more
