Graphic novel memoir is a genre I've really come to enjoy. Gender Queer is a good example - the story of a book-loving kid discovering their nonbinary and asexual identity. It revolves around Maia questioning and trying on different identities. It's also a reminder to not expect someone who's not cis to have all the answers or to model whatever behaviors are supposedly "typical." We're all just figuring things out as we go. ...more

Another fascinating memoir, showing how one artist connect to her identity. I think a big problem for many cis people is how differently many trans people feel about gender; for me it's not really a big deal so being mislabeled isn't important or hurtful to me. But the combination of having it be important and wrong is what makes books like these so important.

I was left hoping for more though; I think Kobabe isn't quite done with er journey so there is more story to be told. Of course, probably ...more
