⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Heart-breakingly beautiful stars
Before starting this book i knew that it was going to be a tough one, I was not silly enough to think that it was going to be a fluffy romance, but ahh this book!!
I also did not know that it was based on a true story, i know obviously Auschwitz is true, but this is also the true story about Lale Sokolov and his "romance story" with the love of his life Gita.

I was wavering between giving this book 3 stars or 4 stars.
I read a couple of top Goodreads reviews before starting The Tattooist of Auschwitz and was surprised to find that the biggest criticism - no prose - was not just an opinion but a blatant issue. A love between two people's fate is so uncertain should be a harrowing tale, but the emotionless writing style failed to evoke any emotion in me.

This story was based on interviews with the real tattooist who only revealed his identity near the end of his life for fear of being considered a Nazi collaborator. He meets the love of his life while there and tries to protect her so she will survive. There are harrowing events, as you would expect, but the depth of horror was lacking, more like reading an account in the newspaper. This novel was slow at time, but rally picked up at the end. It is a heartbreaking story of striving and loving live. I was surprised to learn that this was (view spoiler) ... very interesting. The audio was wonderful.
